Jack Trammell (D) vs. David Brat (R)
7th District U.S. House of Representatives candidates
This article covers details about the candidates who are running as candidates for the House of Representatives election in Virginia. David Brat, a Republican, is the head of Randolph-Macon College's Economic Department. He drew national attention last spring when he surprisingly defeated Eric Cantor, the Majority Whip. Brat is also an economic expert with advanced degrees and many years of experience, and says he plans to use that experience if he reaches Congress. His three-pronged platform campaign claims three main things are currently contributing to a "no growth economy": Obamacare (which, according to him, is stifling job growth), Immigration (he opposes granting citizenship to illegals), and the nation's debt. On the other hand, Trammell, a lifelong educator, has a Master's in History education and also teaches at Randolph-Macon College. However, his views are drastically different from those of Brat. He cites gridlock in Congress as a major problem hindering the progress of effective government in America. Trammell also focuses on education quite a bit, believing that many schools who are struggling with financial situations and needs need immediate help. He also believes the the nations' treatment of veterans needs to be improved. From the perspective of the general public, he seems more open.
Randolph-Macon College in Ashland adjusts to spotlight as Profs. Brat, Trammell face off
Perhaps one of the most surprising things about the recent political activity in Virginia was that of Eric Cantor's defeat by David Brat. However, Brat's new opponent, Jack Trammell, is not only the Democratic nomination for the House of Representatives race, but also a co-worker at Randolph-Macon College. As both are from a small town and an even smaller college of about 100 professors and 1,300 students, the two men running against each other consider themselves casual friends and have often even played basketball with each other. On campus, Brat is known as a conservative on a campus that has many liberal faculty members; regardless, he has been described as "jovial" and is generally well-liked. Trammell has been described as "a gentleman farmer" by one of his students. However, now that the two co-workers are in a race for the House of Representatives, it is up for grabs whether or not they will be able to maintain their friendship. Both have released attack ads against the other, which is common in such elections.

Political Cartoons
This political cartoon mocks how the Republicans in the House of Representatives often shun immigration reform. Brat, for instance, voted against the Dream Act, which would help between six to nine million illegal immigrants eventually gain citizenship. On the other hand, Trammell believes that immigration policy needs improvement in terms of security and granting visas to qualified students.
This cartoon addresses veterans affairs, which is a big issue in the House of Representatives race. Trammell has seen the process veterans go through when they return to the U.S. with his son who returned with injuries from Afghanistan, and believes that changes need to be made in policies concerning how quickly veterans are given aid upon returning from service.
